Who’d have thought that you could have a strawberry banana milkshake that’s creamy and decadent without using ice cream? There’s no gate-keeping here of the little secrets I have to get decadent flavor without using all the sugar and cream that comes with using ice cream.
Best of all? It only takes about 4 easy ingredients that you can find pretty much anywhere.

🌟Banana Strawberry Milkshake Ingredient Highlights
✅ Banana – I like to use fairly ripe (really fragrant and spotty peels). Usually the sugars are higher, and I like how they blend so much nicer than less ripe ones.
✅ Strawberries – Fresh or frozen both work. Try and slice them before blending just to make things easier and remove the green leafy tops!
✅ Milk – If you want a rich, thick milkshake, whole (full fat) milk is the ticket here. Watching those cals? Use 2% or skim, or for alternatives, use almond, coconut, cashew, or creamy oat milk.
✅ Honey, baby! – Ok, totally optional, but if the berries or banana aren’t as mature and sweet as you want, spike the shake with some honey (or even maple syrup)! It’s the better alternative to using plain white sugar.

The Secrets For Thick and Decadent Shakes – No Ice Cream
Okokok. Here are the secrets that I have to share.
- Secret #1 – Freezing The Fruit – So this serves a double-duty purpose. If the bananas are ripening ridiculously fast, peel them and throw them in the freezer. (always peel first because it’s such a headache to try and peel them when you don’t – trust me on that one!)
Using frozen bananas cools down the shake, making it thicker and creamier when blended.
Same goes for the strawberries. If you have them fresh, freeze them and add them to the milkshake to make things deliriously creamy and cool. - Secret #2 – Ice Cold Milk – Here me out – using a slightly higher fat milk (3%/Homogenized) is still a lot lower in calories than using ice cream and it still gives the milkshakes that decadent, creamy mouthfeel that we all really want.
Expert tip: Try freezing some of the milk in cubes – that will also go a long way in making the milkshake thicker and creamier without upping the calories.
- Secret #3 – Coconut Milk Combo – I absolutely LOVE mixing milk with coconut milk (a little goes a long way here). It adds some of the coconut fat and a slight coconut flavor that, if you close your eyes, could make you think you’re on a beach somewhere!
- Secret #4 – Thickeners That Don’t Taste Healthy – My first go-to would be Greek Yogurt. Don’t sleep on this my friends! Greek yogurt adds another level of creaminess that’s undeniably delicious. Try using vanilla flavored or even fruit-added yogurts, but just be careful of the added sugars in them. I like to use Olympic-Krema – higher in fat than other yogurts perhaps, but higher in protein as well. Win Win.
A close second would be unflavored protein powder or cottage cheese. Yes, I know, cottage cheese. Lastly, try adding 1/4 cup of rolled oats! Seriously, once it’s blended in, you don’t taste it, it makes it thicker, and ups the protein count!
📌Making Strawberry Banana Milkshakes without Ice-Cream
An easy pictorial breakdown:

Easy Shake Instructions
- Gather ingredients and put the milk in the blender.
- Add and blend the strawberries.
- Add bananas and sweetener. Blend.
- Garnish and serve!
Please check the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts and directions, and loads of helpful tips to make this perfect every time!
✨Extra Tips and Add-Ins
- Be Extra: Add a spoonful of peanut butter or almond butter for a richer texture. (and more protein!)
- Go Tropical: Sub in mango or pineapple for something tropical.
- Go Greens: A small handful of spinach blends in without affecting flavor.
- Go Cozy: Cocoa powder or chocolate chips can turn it into an extra-special shake.
- Go…Fiber: Add some chia seeds or flax seeds during blending for extra fiber. The chia seeds need to hydrate, so after blending, let the shake sit for 5 minutes and give it a quick blend again.
Storage and Leftovers
Ok, so we all know that fresh is best with shakes or smoothies or anything of this caliber. BUT, it keeps fine in the fridge for a few hours to overnight at the most.
Throw it through the blender again for a quick refresh before drinking, or freeze extra in an ice cube tray and re-blend later with a few splashes of milk.
